African First Ladies Awards (AFLA) is a conceptualised effort (2010 IM) by John Losaka of Vuka Africa, a non-profit organisation whose mandate and vision is to bring about unity, peace, growth and stability on the African Continent by advancing women’s efforts.
AFLA was successfully launched in 20l2 in KwaZulu-Natal in the Durban, City Hall where President Jacob Zuma’s spouse, First Lady Nompumelelo Zuma, featured as a keynote speaker. AFLA focuses on first ladies in the Presidency, premierships, mayoral, counsellors, religious leaders and business/ industry champions including women on monarch level. “We strongly believe that women in leadership positions need a platform to speak with a clear voice of guidance within their environments. Women in general have great potential and capacity to empower, influence and inspire other women to do greeter things, hence Vuka Afrika realised that by recognising and appreciating their gifts, efforts and initiatives, we certainly can highlight the voices of women of Africa and play a significant part in transforming Africa,” Vuka Afrika said.
“We are recognising the efforts of inspirational women in leadership positions by highlighting their community involvement and services that they ore offering. AFLA focuses on projects that involve poverty alleviation, economic development, education, skills development, agriculture, food security, health issues, awareness and campaigns, peace and stability, reconciliation, youth empowerment and job creation.
“Women have a role to play and we want to play our part to support the women of South Africa and on the African continent by bringing young women and community leaders all under one roof to learn from each other.”
AFLA also have an active voting line, nominee line for all members of the public to nominate their first ladies according to the project running under that specific first lady with prizes to be won.
