This week’s BIG move: New DStv channel champions small business, in association with Business Day TV
Small business is about to make a big noise with the launch of the SME Zone on DStv this weekend. The dedicated weekend block, on Channel 412, is styled as a “self-help” manual for small business and those looking to start their own enterprises. The SME Zone is a weekend extension of Times Media’s finance and news channel, Business Day TV. It follows the success of programmes like The Big Small Business Show, now in its fourth year.
The SME Zone will feature step-by-step guides on how to identify, start and grow a successful business; educational modules such as The Small Business MBA; real-life mentoring sessions with experts; and tips and inspiration from some of SA’s top entrepreneurs.
“Nine out of 10 small businesses fail within the first three years,” says Semeyi Zake, creator and executive producer of the SME Zone. “That’s a terrible waste of hope, energy and resources. We aim to give entrepreneurs a fighting chance, via clear templates and business models that will greatly increase their chances of success.”
Some of the shows in the SME Zone line-up include: Jumpstart (self-help jobs you can start with R500 or less); Biz Guide 101 (a blueprint for running 25 popular businesses); Pimp my Bizz (revamping a faltering enterprise); Pitch & Polish (a nationwide search for the best ideas); and SME Funding.
“We realised there’s a hunger for business knowledge beyond the markets and corporate deals. As a channel, we are passionate about small business, realizing that this is where we can make an impact in addressing the country’s skills gap and play our role in creating employment and growing this economy,” Zake adds.
Vernon Matzopoulos, Head of Broadcast at Times Media, said: “We’re looking to help grow the next generation of business, and TV is an incredibly powerful medium of instruction to drive that. Thanks to DStv’s generosity in making the airtime available, we can now reach into 5.5 million homes – and hopefully inspire a small business revolution.”

SA’s Syenap among leading international consumer innovations
Born-in-SA analytics innovator Syenap has been recognised as one of the top consumer innovations from a field of over 250 global applicants for the Accenture Consumer Innovation Awards (ACIA).
The awards, presented by Accenture at the first Millennial 2020 Summit at the Art Science Museum in Singapore this week, recognised and rewarded companies that enhance customer experience and personalisation, increase sales revenue, improve product sourcing and delivery, and enable a more digital workforce. The Summit focused on the millennial-driven, game-changing consumer marketplace, with the ACIA awards assessing startups for their innovation and potential impact.
Syenap COO Kerry Nel says: “The fact that Syenap was among the top 16 finalists selected from over 250 innovators is pretty awesome recognition; and the event itself was the ideal place to showcase how Syenap transforms analytics in the bricks-and-mortar environment.”
Born locally in 2013, disruptive tech start-up Syenap is now making waves in the retail sector around the world for its ability to give retailers the same actionable insights they gain about online clients, in bricks and mortar stores.”

SPARK Media launches Print Fashion Week!
SPARK Media is declaring war on anyone who says that print is boring by proclaiming that the 5th – 9th September was Print Fashion Week!
“Saying that print is dead is like saying that no-one’s wearing sexy Chanel jackets anymore,” says Justine Williams, SPARK Media’s strategic sales and marketing director. “In fact, this season it’s all about the label and the layered look, not to mention tailored cuts, prints and belly bands.”
SPARK Media last week visited media agency partners to demonstrate its latest print innovations that are bringing sexy back into print.
“Our print products are all about creativity, inventiveness and flair,” says Williams. “Our range gives modern advertisers everything they need to make a fashionable statement in a media type that delivers. For example, we’ve introduced the Layered Insert, which as the name suggests, is an insert of three distinct sizes that seamlessly layer over each other.
Our chic Belly Band is a new addition to our collection and our wraps have been refined. The Powernote has two sides to every story. Peel off the sticker and unveil a tailored marketing message beneath it – or, even better, incorporate a QR code for a truly unique and interactive experience.”
SPARK Media and Caxton Printers have taken innovation one step further with their ‘Digiquill’ which gives marketers the option to print individual messages on every pre-printed product. “Just imagine the possibilities,” she says, “You’ll never see the same outfit twice.”
