Move!, South Africa’s largest selling women’s weekly title aimed at black South African women, launched its presence on social media networks Facebook and Twitter during November 2012.
“Move!’s readers value the bite-sized chunks of information in their much-loved magazine, but with more than 8,5 million South Africans online, we knew that the time is right to support the printed copy with an online presence,” says Move!’s editor Noluthando Gweba. “Twitter (@MoveMag) and Facebook were the best places to start, because they are easily accessible, quick to update and much like Move!, is built on ongoing engagement and discussions.”
Updates on the two social media platforms will entice readers to purchase the magazine, by offering hints and insights into the headline stories each week. “We’re also using the platforms to ask our readers for real-time opinions for us to include in each issue of the magazine – and Facebook particularly is a great medium to launch and run competitions,” says Gweba.
The Facebook profile will also offer behind-the-scenes sneak-peaks of the magazine’s cover shoots, and will also include posts by the fashion and beauty editors, giving readers exclusive insights into their styling secrets.
“Move! readers are always on the go, and with more than 7.5 million South Africans holding smart phones in their hands daily, we’re sure that many of our readers are checking social media on their phones regularly to keep up to date with what’s going on around them. Move! will now be clearly visible in their social media timelines, keeping them in touch with what’s going on in the magazine,” Gweba adds.
